Abel Kavanagh was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1979. Following a two-year joint Master's degree (France and Peru) in Science of Information and Communications, he studied a second Master's degree in Documentary Filmmaking in Strasbourg, France.

Extensive travel through Latin America, Africa and Central Asia eventually led him to documentary filmmaking and photography.

Abel directed his first feature documentary "Laberinto Verde" in Bolivia and Peru, for which he received the Louis Lumière Award from the Institut Français. The film was selected and awarded in several international film festivals.

Since then, he has directed a number of independent films, including in Ireland and Kyrgyzstan, and has also worked on different projects with French TV companies.

In addition to his own work as director and producer, Abel has regularly worked as a cameraman, assistant director and editor on various institutional projects, live performances and cinema (for instance, with Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts, New York University, the Global Heritage Fund, etc.).

He joined the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in DR Congo (MONUSCO) in 2014 as a photographer with the Public Information Division. His photographic work has been published in The Economist, Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, RFI, and other renowned media platforms.

After two years documenting MONUSCO’s activities and life on the ground in the DR Congo and neighboring countries, he joined the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) as Digital Media Officer.

Abel has been - and remains - very active in the field of communications - especially on digital media and new cutting-edge technology such as Virtual Reality. He also enjoys disappearing into the wild for much-needed digital detox.

Abel Kavanagh est né à Dublin, Irlande en 1979. Après un échange bilatéral de deux années entre la France et le Pérou, où il a obtenu un Master en Sciences de l'Information et de la Communication, il a suivi un second Master en Cinéma Documentaire à l’Université de Strasbourg en France.

Ses nombreux voyages en Amérique latine, en Afrique et en Asie centrale l'ont naturellement conduit à la réalisation de films documentaires et à la photographie.

Il réalise son premier long métrage documentaire "Laberinto Verde" en Bolivie et au Pérou, pour lequel il a obtenu la bourse Louis Lumière de l'Institut Français. Le film fut sélectionné et primé dans plusieurs festivals internationaux.

Depuis, il a réalisé d'autres films indépendants, notamment en Irlande et au Kirghizistan, et a également développé plusieurs projets avec des chaînes de télévision françaises.

En parallèle de son activité comme réalisateur et producteur, Abel a régulièrement travaillé comme caméraman, assistant réalisateur et monteur pour divers projets institutionnels, le spectacle vivant et le cinéma (Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains, l'Université de New York, le Global Heritage Fund, etc.).

Il a rejoint en 2014 la Mission de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour la Stabilisation en République Démocratique du Congo (MONUSCO) en tant que photographe auprès de la Division de l'Information Publique. Son travail photographique a été publié dans The Economist, Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, RFI, et d'autres plates-formes numériques de renom.

Après deux années consacrées aux activités de la MONUSCO et à la vie sur le terrain en RD Congo et ses pays voisins, il rejoint la Mission d'appui des Nations Unies en Libye (UNSMIL) comme officier des médias digitaux.

Abel a été, et reste, très actif dans le champ de la communication, plus particulièrement dans le domaine des médias numériques et les nouvelles technologies de pointe telles que la réalité virtuelle. Il aime disparaître de temps en temps dans la nature pour une nécessaire désintoxication digitale.
